Recommended Steeping Time

How to Strain Your Cold Brew

It is necessary to filter the coffee grounds from the water once the coffee has been steeped for a period of time. A fine-mesh sieve or a French press filter will not suffice (you will end up with a murky, sludgy concentrate if you use these techniques). The majority of approaches will recommend using cheese cloth, however I despise cheese cloth! It’s tough to deal with, and it appears to be quite wasteful. As I experimented with many additional possibilities, I discovered two that are quite effective.

Choose one of the following:

  1. Use the “basket” paper filters that splay out in a circular seashell form as you see below, rather than the thicker “bag” paper filters. If you’re using a paper filter, make sure it’s composed of very thin paper rather of a heavier substance that will take an eternity to filter through. This is a list of the filters that I used
  2. A handkerchief from the past: Yes, you may use any tiny, thin, clean, lint-free cotton fabric, such as a cocktail napkin, for this project. When draped across your sieve, it should be large enough to completely cover it. In my picture props, I discovered a handkerchief that was easy to wash and reuse, and I love that it’s inexpensive (although you could wind up with a light coffee stain, so don’t use your favorite white one)

For a fine-mesh sieve, insert the coffee filter into it, or lay your towel over the sieve, to strain it out. It should be set up over a pitcher or liquid measuring cup, and the concentrate should be poured through it. That’s all there is to it! Perhaps you like to drink your coffee over ice during the warmer months of the year. Alternatively, you can be someone who drinks iced coffee all year round. Whatever the case, for coffee enthusiasts, there’s no doubting how pleasant an iced coffee can be when the weather begins to heat up a little. A daily cup of cold brew from the neighborhood coffee shop, though, may add up, which is why we prefer to make our own at home—and it couldn’t be much easier to prepare.

Cold-brewed coffee (also known as cold brew) is similar to iced coffee in that it is somewhat colder.

We’ll venture to state it: Cold brew is the perfect summer beverage since it is both caffeinated and refreshing, which are two words that you and your money can get behind.

In other words, cold brew is coffee that has been brewed cold and never heated, whereas iced coffee is regular coffee that has been brewed hot and then chilled.

Here are a few factors that contributed to the transformation of cold brew from an alternate iced coffee to a ubiquitous coffee shop sweetheart (and why we’re a fan):

  • As a result, there is a lower amount of acidity in the finished brew than in conventionally brewed or drip coffee since the grounds are not subjected to the strong heat of boiling water. Lower acidity results in a smoother cup that is softer on the stomach and more pleasant to drink. In a similar vein, hot coffee that is abruptly cooled has a slightly bitter flavor. Because of the decreased acidity of cold brew, it naturally has a sweeter flavor. Problems with water are no longer an issue: Have you ever tried to pour hot coffee over ice? Then you’re probably familiar with the concept of diluted coffee. In addition, watery coffee is depressing. Cold brew allows you to control the amount of dilution. Because it is already chilly or at room temperature, the addition of ice or more water is absolutely optional
  • Nonetheless, it is recommended. A cup with a higher concentration of caffeine: The high bean-to-water ratio and longer brewing time in cold brew give it a stronger buzz than hot brew, even though hot brew is more soluble and extracts more readily from the beans. If you want to temper the intensity, you can use milk or cream.

Unlike iced coffee, cold brew is significantly more costly when purchased from coffee shops, making it the most expensive option. It is, however, a problem with a straightforward solution: Make your own cold brew at home in three simple steps. Any big container, French press, or even a Mason jar would suffice (there are even dedicated cold-brewing contraptions available if this is going to be your new morning beverage of choice). Really, if it can handle coffee and water, you can use it to make cold brew.

Here’s why cold-brewing could well be the most straightforward coffee preparation method available:

Grind

The proportion of coffee grinds to water is a matter of personal preference and relies on personal taste. A decent place to start is to grind 3/4 cup beans for 4 cups of cold water—about the size of a 32-ounce French press—and use that mixture as a starting point. Depending on the size of your container, you may double or even treble the quantities—using 1.5 cups beans for every 8 cups water—or even quadruple the quantities. After that, crush the beans extremely finely. We’re serious about it.

Soak and wait (and wait, and wait…)

Using a container that is not required to have a lid but can be made of plastic, glass, or ceramic, pour the coffee into it. The container should be large enough to hold both the coffee and the water, but small enough that you can easily take up the entire thing to filter it. Pour the coffee into the bottom of the canister if you’re using a French press. Pour the water into the container or the French press in little amounts at a time. Gently stir the mixture to ensure that all of the coffee grounds are wet.

Place the top of the French press on (but do not push down on the plunger) and turn it on.

Don’t hurry through this.

You may use the cheesecloth from the top of your container to line a large pitcher (or bowl, or whatever container you want to store your cold brew in) if you’re using a container. Pour the coffee down the sieve, allowing it to filter for a minute or two to ensure that all of the coffee is removed. Discard the sediments and cheesecloth. When using a French press, just press down on the plunger to transfer the grounds to the bottom of the press. Pour. That’s all there is to it! You’ve got some chilly brew.

  1. 1 12 cups of dark roast coffee should be ground. Using a medium coarse grind, ground the coffee beans. Mix in 6 cups filtered water until everything is well-combined. Place coffee grinds in a big jar or pitcher and fill it half way with filtered water
  2. Give it a gentle swirl. Refrigerate for 24 hours before using. You don’t have to do anything since the miracle of brewing happens right here! Just sit back and wait for the coffee to brew. Filter the coffee with a strainer. Using a sieve with a towel or cheesecloth inside, pour the coffee into a separate container and discard the rest of the coffee grounds. After that, your iced coffee is ready to enjoy! Water it down with equal parts cold water and coffee concentrate to form 9 servings, and serve immediately.

Alternative method: French press

Alternatively, you may use a French press to produce cold brew coffee, which is a great alternate approach. The advantage of this strategy is that it is significantly cleaner and simpler than the previous method.
