Anti-coffee roasting firm Counter Culture Coffee was established in Durham, North Carolina in 1995. Counter Culture has regional training locations in Asheville, North Carolina; Atlanta; Boston; Charleston, South Carolina; Chicago; Durham, North Carolina; Emeryville, California; New York City; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C. Counter Culture training centers provide education in the fundamentals of preparing and servingcoffee as well as serving as classrooms and event venues. In addition to Counter Culture Coffee merchants, training facilities are accessible to anybody who is interested in learning about the coffee-brewing process.

Because Counter Culture Coffee sources primarily from small coffee producers at prices ranging between $1.30 and $25 per pound, the company is classified as a “boutique” coffee roaster, which is defined as a company that sources from multiple small farms and cooperatives rather than a single large grower or producer.

Sustainability

In direct collaboration with the craftsmen who cultivate the coffee, Counter Culture Coffee’s sustainable coffee approach is built on the foundation of their cooperation with farmers, which entails working with progressive and ecologically sensitive farms in the trade. In 2008, they created direct trade standards for sustainability, quality, and justice in the coffee chain through the use of a third-party Counter Culture Direct Trade Certification program, which was introduced by Counter Culture.

In order to encourage sustainability and education about the sources of the goods, the SEEDS program was launched, while the Sustainability Scorecard is used to assess the effect of the company’s efforts to create a more sustainable supply chain.

Education

Consumers, staff, and wholesale partners may all benefit from the company’s training seminars on topics such as coffee brewing, its origin, and its history. Brewing Science, Barista Fundamentals, Coffee Origins, Cupping Fundamentals, and Brewing: Technique and Troubleshooting are just a few of the subjects covered in the professional development courses available. Public educational activities include free “Tastings at Ten” every Friday morning, as well as home brew laboratories for coffee aficionados, which are available for a charge on Saturday mornings.

Counter Culture Coffee Arrives in Deep Ellum This Weekend

Counter Culture Coffee’s training facility, located at 3333 Commerce Street in Deep Ellum, will open its doors on Friday, January 31. The caffeine gods have sent us a new temple of coffee. You’re most likely familiar with the Durham, North Carolina–based firm whose roasts can be found at Fiction Coffee, Sip Stir Coffee House, Brewed and Pressed, and the Joule Hotel’s Third Wave coffee store, Weekend, among other locations throughout the country. Counter Culture Coffee is preparing its “polished, enhanced way to enjoy coffee,” according to regional manager Kathy Altamirano, after four years of developing a significant presence in Dallas’s business community.

Baristas can improve their professional standing by participating in a certification program (which is essentially third-party verification that they have the necessary abilities while transferring from job to job).

So there’s a word of caution for any aspiring baristas out there.

A few years ago, when Altamirano relocated to Dallas from Los Angeles, some could have asserted that the city lacked a cafe thought leader, someone to glorify the city’s growing collection of coffee shops.

“Doing it out of a sense of passion is what builds a fantastic coffee community,” says the author.

In addition to coffee, Altamirano said the location will offer pop-up dinners with other local chefs in the future.

(Altamirano suggests to keep an eye out on Eventbrite for further information when the date and details become available.) As for the celebrations that will take place this weekend.

At 10 a.m., there will be a coffee tasting, which will include baked goods from Crumb and Kettle, as well as remarks from Counter Culture creator Brett Smith.

until noon, which is somewhat short.

The training facility will be available for visitors from 10 a.m.

What else: Oatly ice cream floats from Fount Board and Table, as well as nibbles from the restaurant.
