Our Coffee History

Our tale begins with James Folger, who, at the age of fourteen, embarked on a journey to San Francisco. After their family’s livelihood was devastated by a catastrophic fire on Nantucket, he and his two brothers set off in quest of gold in the area. In the meanwhile, his brothers went out to work in the mines, but James stayed behind and found work at The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills in Seattle.

1854

James became a full-fledged partner in the Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills in 2013. However, following the Civil War, the economy collapsed, resulting in the company falling out of business completely. The business’s debts were paid off when he persuaded his creditors to do so, and he subsequently bought out all of the other partners, renaming the company J A FolgerCo, Inc.

1880

While many coffee importers historically purchased and sold beans only on the basis of appearance, the concept of “cup-testing” was developed in San Francisco in the 1960s. Following the implementation of this process, James began cup-testing shipments of beans personally in order to establish a taste standard for his coffees. Within a short period of time, it became clear that Mountain-Grown® beans have better characteristics in terms of flavor and scent.

1889

Following the death of his father, James A. Folger at the young age of 54, his son, James A. Folger II, assumed control of the rapidly expanding coffee business. His letter to his son the year before stated that there was more to operating a successful business than earning a profit, and that “making money was always secondary to maintaining a good reputation.”

1900

Because of the efforts of an enthusiastic salesperson called Frank P. Atha, our organization began to expand its operations outside of California. He was successful in convincing merchants in eastern states to carry Folgers® Coffee, which he sold on the basis of its merit and good quality. Frank worked closely with grocers, assisting them in the selling of their products by handing out samples of coffee from elaborate in-store displays that he created himself.

1906

Because to the efforts of an enthusiastic salesman called Frank P. Atha, our firm was able to expand its operations outside of California and begin to develop rapidly from there. To get Folgers® Coffee on the shelves of grocery stores in the eastern United States, he used his persuasive skills and high-quality product to convince them to do so. With his elaborate in-store displays that he built himself, Frank frequently aided grocers with sales. He did this by handing out coffee samples from the displays.

1940s

During World War II, the demand for coffee surged, but because of acute metal shortages, we were forced to adapt in terms of packaging. FolgersCoffee was sold in glass jars with wax-coated cardboard covers because steel was not available at the time. Due to the large number of workers who were drafted into the war, executives and salespeople were also recruited to assist with the packaging of coffee.

1953

Following World War II, the popularity of instant coffee grew, and we made the decision to introduce our first instant coffee.

Folgers Instant was first introduced in 1953, however it was eventually abandoned since it did not meet the expectations of customers. With enough time to develop a product that was superior to the competition, the new Instant Folgers was introduced in 1958 and had remarkable success.

1960

As a result of the war, transportation routes from Central America to New Orleans were altered, resulting in the city being one of the major green-coffee marketplaces in the world. Around this time, we began planning the construction of our largest coffee facility to date. Construction on our New Orleans home began in 1960, and it is still in use today as the location of Where We Roast.

1963

Folgers Coffee was bought by Procter & Gamble, who began distributing the product across the country. The figure of Mrs. Olson was launched in television and print advertisements to help us become America’s number-one coffee brand, and she played an important role in that success. Mrs. Olson was the brand’s spokesperson for more than two decades.

1975

It was with the “Tastes As Rich As It Looks” promotion that Folgers Crystals was debuted to the market in 1975. Later, with “The Great Folgers Switch,” we put off a very effective trick in 1980. During this promotion, unsuspecting coffee consumers’ ordinary coffee was covertly switched out for Folgers Crystals coffee in order to promote the product. A number of upmarket restaurants, including some well-known ones, have made the changeover.

1984

During the early ’80s, a fresh advertising campaign was launched. As an alternative to hiring a new spokesperson, we came up with the phrase, “The Best Part of Waking Up is Folgers in Your Cup®.” It went on to become one of the most instantly identifiable pieces of advertising in the history of popular culture in America.

2000

Several events were held in celebration of our 150th anniversary, including a National Jingle Singin’ Search. As part of the Save The Music philanthropic cause, we worked in cooperation with VH-1 to generate funds for underfunded music programs in elementary schools.

2002

When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005, our Folgers factory, as well as the homes of many of our employees, suffered significant damage. When our company reopened after the disaster, it was the first major industry to resume operations in New Orleans following the storm.

2008

Murder of Abigail Folger

At 101 Howard Street in San Francisco’s Financial District, the brick Folger Coffee Company Building houses the old headquarters of Folgers Coffee & Tea Company. It is on the National Register of Historic Places in the United States. It still retains a sign on one of its corners that reads “The Folgers Coffee Company.” University of San Francisco bought the Folger Building on August 2, 2011, signifying the university’s return to its roots in the heart of downtown San Francisco.
