An Ode to Coffee Milk, New England’s Sweetest Sip

Having sat down with my buddies, I was pumped to get started (well, as thrilled as you could possibly be about eating a school lunch back in the 1990s). It was a shock to take my first taste, and I’m confident that I handled it with all the elegance and dignity that one would expect from a 10-year-old.

My boyfriend and I decided to conduct a blind taste test of four of them with the help of a handful of our friends to see which ones they preferred. So that everything was equal, we used 1 tablespoon of syrup per 4 ounces of whole milk for each of the four dishes. Here’s how they went about it:

1.Autocrat Coffee Syrup

This brand is probably the most widely available of the four, since it is carried by the majority of grocery stores in my area. We couldn’t help but wonder how the original Autocrat from the 1930s would have tasted after sampling this version. To be really honest, the newer stuff is underwhelming. We all agreed that the milk was very sweet, with only a faint tinge of coffee taste in the background.

2.Eclipse Coffee Syrup

In my neighborhood, this brand is probably the most widely available of the four options. Most grocery shops carry it. We couldn’t help but wonder how the original Autocrat from the 1930s would have tasted after sampling this version of the beverage. Actually, the contemporary work is really uninteresting. Each of us felt that the milk was too sugary, with only a slight trace of coffee taste.

3.Dave’s Coffee Syrup

Dave’s Coffee, which was established in 2009, is primarily a coffee roaster. Owner Dave Lanning was inspired by the popularity of coffee milk and wanted to create a coffee syrup that he himself would love drinking. After months of trial and error, he and his team came up with the idea of simmering cold-brewed Brazilian coffee with cane sugar to make their syrup. Despite the fact that their trademark amber bottles are attractive and eye-catching, they also serve a functional purpose: The hot-bottling procedure that they utilize produces a shelf-stable product that does not require any preservatives, but it does necessitate the use of a bottle that can resist high temperatures.
