I recently made the move from hot coffee to iced coffee and immediately learned that my usual approach of sweetening the drink with a tablespoon of sugar will not work in this case. Sugar simply does not dissolve in cold drinks and instead settles to the bottom of the cup, causing it to become cloudy. Bummer. This presented me with a bit of a conundrum. I decided to run an experiment in order to determine the most effective technique to sweeten an iced coffee beverage. I experimented with and tested nine different approaches.
The following is a brief description of my experiment: I got two venti (biggest) iced coffees from Starbucks in order to maintain a consistent size.
Each sweetening ingredient was evaluated for its taste, texture, and overall effectiveness, which I documented.
However, I hope that it will assist you in discovering some intriguing and innovative alternatives to plain old simple syrup for sweetening your coffee.
How to sweeten iced coffee
Simply heat sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio until the sugar has completely dissolved before using it to sweeten iced coffee (see recipe below). Sugar substitutes such as agave nectar or maple syrup are recommended. Add vanilla extract, coconut milk, or unsweetened cocoa powder to your iced coffee for a sugar-free way to sweeten it without using sugar. The recipes listed below are all traditional sweets that involve sugar in some way or another.
(but not necessarily pure sugar). Not all of them, such as honey, are detrimental to one’s health. If you wish to stay away from sugar entirely, skip the section on how to sweeten iced coffee without adding sugar.
Make a simple sugar syrup
This is the most often used method of sweetening iced coffee. Sugar water is created by dissolving sugar in boiling water. You may then add this sweetened water to your iced coffee to make it more refreshing. It will blend very well.

The preparation of sugar syrup (also known as simple syrup) is extremely simple, and it keeps for at least a month in the refrigerator, allowing you to make a large batch and store it for later use.

One of the most appealing aspects of creating your own sugar syrup is that you have complete control over the final product. It is possible to add additional accents of flavor in the shape of spices, herbs, citrus zest, vanilla beans, and even an extra tablespoon or two of espresso powder.
How long does simple syrup last?
Syrup made with a 1:1 sugar to water ratio will keep in the fridge for up to a month. Using a 2:1 sugar to water ratio, the syrup will keep for around 6 months. Sweetened condensed milk
Using sweetened condensed milk to sweeten iced coffee is my personal favorite method of doing so. In Vietnam, sweetened condensed milk is standard, and I can’t say I blame them. It’s DELICIOUS.The condensed milk sweetens the coffee while also giving it a slightly thicker consistency.I’d recommend using 2 tablespoons of condensed milk per glass of iced coffee.You’ll need to whisk the mixture carefully to ensure that the condensed milk is properly incorporated into the coffee. The mixture has a propensity to sink to the bottom of the container if it is not well mixed (see pic above).
Ice cream is a great way to give your iced coffee a mellow and’slow release’ sweetness that will last all day. This is a highly rich dessert, but everyone deserves a treat every now and again! A couple scoops of your favorite ice cream can do wonders for the sweetness of your coffee. Mint chocolate chip or plain vanilla are two of my personal favorites. Make careful to give the drink a good swirl to ensure that the ice cream is totally melted and well mixed in.
Chocolate ice cubes / sweetened coffee ice cubes
The mellow sweetness of ice cream is ideal for enhancing the flavor of your iced coffee. It’s an indulgent treat, but everyone deserves a little indulgence every now and then. A couple of spoons of your favorite ice cream will do wonders for the sweetness of your coffee. Mint choc chip or plain vanilla are two of my favorite flavors. Make sure to thoroughly stir the drink to ensure that the ice cream is completely melted and mixed in.
Almond milk (sweetened)
A mild sweetness is provided by vanilla almond milk; nevertheless, some people are turned off by the almond flavor. Rather of drinking regular milk, you can use a nondairy option that has already been sweetened. Even additional sweetness will be provided by vanilla-flavored almond milk. Also suitable as dairy substitutes are coconut and soy – use whatever you have on hand (as long as it has been sweetened! ).

When I go to Starbucks, I always get an additional drizzle of caramel on top of my drink. However, even if it doesn’t dissolve very well in cold beverages, if you stir it long enough, the caramel gets thoroughly absorbed and you will be able to taste it in every sip. When making this, it is best to add the caramel to your cup BEFORE you put in the coffee. If you do it this way, you may drip it down the edges of your cup, which will sweeten the entire beverage. If your caramel is too firm to drizzle, heat it for a few seconds in the microwave to soften it up.

If you only need sugar and don’t have any on hand, maybe you’ve discovered something acceptable in the list above.
However, if you’re trying to stay away from sugar in all of its disguised forms, here are some healthy alternatives for sweetening iced coffee that you might try.
Use coconut milk/water (unsweetened)
Coconut milk is the ideal sugar-free sweetener for your iced coffee because it contains no sugar. Coconut is inherently sweet, so substituting coconut water for some of the water or using coconut milk instead of regular creamer can offer a hint of sweetness without the need for additional sugar or sweetener. It also imparts a unique flavor to the beverage. You will be transported to a white sand beach someplace in paradise as you drink this coffee! Coconut cream will also work in this situation.
Unsweetened cocoa powder
A mocha-style iced coffee made with unsweetened cocoa powder paste is a sugar-free alternative to the traditional beverage. If you enjoy mochas but don’t want to consume too much sugar, use unsweetened cocoa powder for the sugary chocolate syrup. Although the powder will not immediately sweeten the drink, it will leave a sweet aftertaste and have a chocolate flavor to it. A cold drink will not dissolve the powder if it is mixed with it beforehand. What I do is produce a slurry out of some hot water and the powder, and then add an ice cube to chill it down a little bit more.
Extracts (mint, vanilla, coconut, hazelnut)
Adding a drop or two of vanilla essence to iced coffee sweetens it without adding any sugar. It can be difficult to achieve a strong sweet flavor without the use of sugar, but pure extracts are capable of accomplishing this. Simply add 1-2 drops to your cup of coffee and stir to combine. In addition, the extracts will provide an additional taste dimension. If you want a sweet taste that is more straightforward, vanilla is the best choice. The addition of hazelnut or almond will give the dish a nutty sweetness.

You may use any vanilla-flavored dairy replacement; if you don’t have vanilla, you can substitute chocolate or almonds, if you have those options available.
The sugar-free skinny syrups are a sugar-free substitute for the typical simple syrups.
You may get them at your local grocery or on the internet (like these delicious ones on Amazon). Sweeteners such as sucralose are used in place of sugar in this recipe. They have no calories and are keto-friendly.

However, if you begin frequenting all of the best coffee shops in town, it becomes prohibitively pricey. A $10 latte from Alfred’s Coffee was one of the luxuries I indulged in at one time. However, nothing compares the handmade version, both in terms of taste and in terms of cost.
All that is required is that you brew your coffee the night before using high-quality coffee beans.
Now, I’m not a big lover of pouring hot coffee over ice, but if that’s not a dealbreaker for you, go ahead and make this in the morning — the choice is entirely yours.
If you don’t like to drench your coffee with sweet delight, a batch should last you a couple of weeks.
In this case, there is no passing judgment. Add a splash of milk or half-and-half at this point, though I strongly recommend the latter. Right in your own home, you can avoid the crowded Starbucks line and enjoy high-quality coffee for a quarter of the cost.
- 3 cups brewed coffee, served at room temperature

When you prepare cold brew coffee, it is not a sin to seek to improve the flavor of the coffee. But, how do you do it? For example, making simple syrup or liquid sugar, which is a simple but effective method, can save time and money. Understanding that you cannot mix sugar or artificial sweeteners with cold brew is critical because they will not dissolve in the coffee is essential. If you don’t care for the strong and often overwhelming flavor of cold brew, you may improve the flavor by adding liquid sugar to any cold brewing technique.
When you remove the heat from the brew, the sugar will float to the surface and remain separate from the chilled beverage.

Was it ever revealed to you that I drink iced coffee every morning, come rain or shine, sleet or snow? When I wake up in the morning, there’s nothing more refreshing than a big tall glass of slightly sweetened iced coffee. But the same old thing can get boring, so I’m here to take you outside of your comfort zone and introduce to you to a few new variations on everyone’s favorite summer beverage. In fact, I believe that iced coffee is superior to hot coffee since it’s almost like a dessert in a glass: just combine the ingredients (ice, coffee, flavoring syrup, and dairy or non-dairy milk of choice) and you’ve got yourself a dessert in a glass.
It’s a fantastic combo that you should try, and it’s SO simple to make at home!
What type of coffee should I use?
To make the coffee for your iced coffee recipe, you should use high-quality coffee beans, just as you would for any other cup of joe. I guarantee this is not a paid advertisement for Lavazza, but I really enjoy their dark roast coffee. To make coffee at home, you may either purchase the beans and grind them yourself, or you can purchase pre-ground coffee from your local grocery shop or convenience store. It is entirely up to you! I’ll also try to visit my favorite local cafes and purchase their house blends, as well as pick up some coffee from Starbucks whenever possible.
Espresso vs coffee
To create the coffee for your iced coffee recipe, you should use high-quality coffee beans, just as you would for a regular cup of joe. The following is not an advertisement for Lavazza, although I enjoy their dark roast espresso. Pre-ground coffee may be purchased at your local grocery shop or you can purchase whole beans and grind them at home using a coffee grinder. You have the final say! Also, I make it a point to visit my favorite local cafes and get their house blends, as well as to pick up a Starbucks cup.
What about cold brew coffee?
In addition, you may prepare cold brew coffee, which has grown increasingly popular in recent years. This post by Cookie and Kate describes how to prepare cold brew coffee, which is basically coffee that has been steeped overnight in the refrigerator via thin coffee filters. The procedure takes a long time (12-18 hours), but the flavor is incredible, so depending on how far ahead of time you’re ready to make the iced coffee, this may be an appealing alternative to consider.
What type of ice is best for iced coffee?
I understand that picking the appropriate ice for your iced coffee may not seem significant, but it is! Here are some options for you:
- This recipe calls for crushed ice, which you will see in the pictures. Because I needed to prepare a large amount of coffee, I purchased a large bag of crushed ice and used it extensively. This is the type of iced coffee that I prefer to make. It’s generally the case that folks have medium-sized ice cubes on hand in their freezer, and I recommend that you use them
- A huge block of ice is preferred while drinking iced coffee outside, since it allows me to enjoy the beverage more comfortably. This method causes them to melt more slowly.

Can you store leftover iced coffee in the fridge?
Both yes and no. Truthfully, it all depends on how much of a coffee connoisseur you consider yourself. If you’re accustomed to a freshly brewed cup of coffee, putting leftovers in the refrigerator may not be a smart idea. Cold brew will normally last 2-3 days in the fridge if it’s been properly stored; the flavors will stay a little longer because it’s been brewed at a lower temperature. Drip coffee that has been chilled, on the other hand, has a shorter shelf life before the robust coffee flavor begins to fade and the coffee becomes stale.
However, aside from the taste, there will be nothing inherently wrong with the coffee, so feel free to judge it solely on the basis of your own personal preferences.
Iced coffee add-ins
In both yes and no ways, of course. To be completely honest, it all depends on how much of a coffee snob you are. Storing any leftovers in the fridge may not be the best choice if you’re accustomed to a freshly brewed cup of coffee. In the refrigerator, cold brew will normally last 2-3 days if it is properly stored; the flavors will stay a little longer because it is brewed cold. Drop coffee that has been refrigerated, on the other hand, has a shorter shelf life before the powerful coffee flavor begins to fade and the coffee becomes stale.
The only time I’d advocate keeping it is for 24 hours or less. Apart from the flavor, there will be nothing fundamentally wrong with the coffee, so feel free to assess it only on the basis of its appearance.

Making simple syrup
Making a basic syrup for iced coffee is highly recommended since sugar does not dissolve very well in a cold beverage. All you have to do is complete the following steps:
- 1 cup water should be brought to a boil, then mixed with 1 cup sugar. Pour in any appropriate extracts (vanilla, caramel, coconut, etc.)
- Mix well. Cool in the refrigerator for 1 hour before using (or chill in the freezer to expedite the process)
Making the Iced Caramel Macchiato
Creating the rich dulce de leche caramel syrup and layering the espresso and milk in this Iced Caramel Machiatto recipe is the key to producing this drink; it’s also much simpler than you may imagine! Start with an empty cup filled with ice, and then add a couple tablespoons of the syrup to taste. Prepare your espresso and pour it very delicately over the milk of your choice – I usually use 2 percent milk, but whole milk makes this drink extra creamy and decadent – and stir gently. If you don’t have dulce de leche on hand (you can usually find it with the jams or in the ice cream isle of your local grocery store), simply boil a can of sweetened condensed milk for 3 hours in a large pot of gently boiling water until it becomes thick and syrupy, stirring occasionally.
Making the Iced Vanilla Latte
Vanilla lattes are quite simple to make, and you don’t need to spend a lot of money on a high-quality vanilla bean to obtain a rich flavor from this syrup. The formula for this syrup, like the rest of the syrups on this page, is fairly straightforward. Make a plain simple syrup by combining boiling water and sugar together, then flavor it with your favorite flavoring ingredient. Although I used plain old artificial vanilla extract for this vanilla latte recipe, the more expensive pure vanilla extract or even the vanilla bean would be a better choice if you can find them.
Start with an empty cup filled with ice, just like you would with a machiatto.
Making the Iced Mocha
This chocolate iced mocha is produced in a similar manner to the vanilla latte, and the key ingredient, cocoa powder, is likely already in your pantry. Simple syrup from the Vanilla recipe above is combined with a spoonful of cocoa, and you’re ready to go. Start with an empty cup full of ice, then pour in your espresso shots and stir in some milk and chocolate syrup until everything is well-combined. It’s really simple! If you really want to take this iced mocha to the next level, you could also use chocolate milk or even a few drops of mint extract to make it an iced peppermint mocha, which would be delicious.
