  • French press or Mason jar filled halfway with water
  • 1/2 cup coarsely ground coffee (you can use more or less depending on your preference)


  1. Fill your French press or Mason jar halfway with freshly ground coffee. Place the filter/plunger with care so that it sits just on top of the grounds, keeping them completely submerged in water. Refrigerate overnight or for up to 24 hours to allow flavors to blend. Plunge the plunger gently down into the coffee cup first thing in the morning to push the grinds to the bottom. In our blog post “Cold Brew: 5 Things You Should Know,” we discussed concepts such as “ratio,” “concentrate,” and “dilution,” among others. To summarize, most cold brew is not prepared for consumption – and if it is, you will be drinking a highly caffeinated and extremely powerful cup of coffee. As an alternative, you’re making the tea with a lower amount of water and then “cutting” the concentrate when you’re ready to consume it. Our baseline for Cold Brew in a French Press

This recipe demonstrates how to squeeze the most cups possible out of a tiny (1 liter and under) French Press by employing a tight ratio. It may also be used to generate enough concentrate for a week’s worth of consumption in a bigger press. In the sidebar, you can see how to brew a smooth, effortless extraction in a bigger French Press, which is also available. Overall, though, cold brew is a forgiving technique, and you should be confident in your ability to produce a fantastic cup of coffee.

Making Cold Brew in a standard, 6 cup French Press

  • The following ingredients are required: 75 grams coarse ground coffee (for the French press)
  • 600 mL water (1:8 brew ratio)
  • Freshly filtered, room temperature water

Directions for French Press Cold Brew

  1. Fill the French Press halfway with coarsely ground coffee grounds
  2. Make a mark on your scale
  3. Pour in enough water to completely cover the grounds using room temperature water and then stop
  4. Stir the grinds with a spoon or gently swirl them around to ensure that they are uniformly moist
  5. Fill the rest of the way with water, up to 600ml. Cover the brewer and store it in a cool, dark area away from direct sunlight. Take off the top and break up any leftover “crust” in the brewer after 16-20 hours of brewing. Slowly, very slowly, dip the filter down until it is just over the coffee bed that has been rested
  6. Repeat as necessary. Enjoy! We recommend diluting with an equal amount of water to get a strength that is comparable to that of regular drip coffee, but you can experiment and dilute to your liking.
Further notes:
  • Cold brew coffee concentrate yields approximately 450 mL of drinking cold brew coffee concentrate
  • Diluting this with equivalent amounts of water yields two or three full serves of cold brew coffee. In addition, ice will help you travel a bit further
  • In the end, the coffee should be robust and full-bodied, delightfully chocolate-y yet with a mellow acidity
  • It should be diluted 1:1 with water for a smooth and drinking cup, or served over a full glass of crushed ice with a dash of water. It’s always worth making a note of anything and altering your cut to suit your unique preferences


  • When weighing your water, it’s helpful to remember that one milliliter equals one gram in mass. If you use our 1:8 ratio, you’ll require 12.5 grams of coffee for every 100 milligrams (grams) of water, which will allow you to choose the size of your brew. Just keep in mind that this ratio generates a concentrate, which should be chilled after brewing and then diluted with water or ice before serving to prevent scorching. If you’re using a little, single-serving French press or a massive 1,700 mill beast, you’ll be able to make the most of your time and work in this manner. The following ratio should be used: 1:12, or 8.4 grams of coffee for every 100 milligrams (grams) of water you’re adding to make a smooth, ready-to-serve cold brew in a bigger press (since you’re not concerned with increasing serving size through a concentrated brew). I understand that fall is approaching and that everyone is looking forward to pumpkin spice lattes. However, it is still really hot outdoors, and I have been honing my cold brew coffee skills over the summer. Listen up, because I’ve recently become a self-proclaimed cold brew connoisseur. The following are the ingredients for homemade cold brew coffee:

  • This drink is smooth and somewhat sweet, and it’s quite refreshing. Simple to make
  • It is less expensive than purchasing from a coffee shop. For those who have a hectic morning schedule
  • If you’re in the mood for a hot cup of coffee, it’s simple to heat up.

You may create cold brew over the weekend and then pour your coffee straight from the refrigerator in the mornings. There will be no boiling water. There’s no need to fiddle with a coffee machine. Cold brew coffee has completely transformed my daily routine as someone who is not a morning person at all. Let’s get some iced coffee going!

Fun Facts about Cold Brew Coffee

Several factors influence this, including the type of beans used, the steeping period, and the degree of diluting. The dilution element is the one that is the most straightforward to manage. Drinking cold brew concentrate directly is not recommended because it contains a lot of caffeine.

Cold brew is less acidic.

If typical drip coffee or espresso makes your stomach feel queasy, cold brew may not be for you. To find out, you must test it, and you will have greater control over the final product if you produce it yourself.

The tea may be of any sort, and you’ll find that steeping it in cold water rather than boiling water makes it taste less bitter overall. In order to see how different cold brew coffee and hot coffee of the same kind are, it would be interesting to compare the two.

Basic Cold Brew Coffee Ratio

Here’s the deal: this is a ratio that may be adjusted. Akitchen scalewill come in helpful if you have one, but it’s not required. You’re preparing cold brew concentrate, and once it’s completed, you may dilute it to your desired flavor.

  • 1 ounce (by weight) coarsely ground coffee is required for every 1 cup of boiling water. That’s around 1/4 cup whole coffee beans, which will give approximately 1/2 cup ground coffee when ground. As a reminder, if you’re used to the metric system, 1 ounce is equal to 28 grams. You’ll end up with a bit less concentrated coffee than you would have if you’d used more water since part of it will be absorbed by the coffee grounds.   • Let’s create cold brew coffee in a standard 1 quart wide-mouth mason jar for demonstration purposes (affiliate link). In a jar, add 3 ounces coarsely ground coffee (equivalent to approximately 3/4 cup whole coffee beans ground into 1 1/2 cups coarsely ground coffee) and 3 cups water
  • Stir well. After steeping and filtering the mixture, you’ll have around 2 1/2 cups of cold brew concentrate, which is enough to make 5 cups of cold brew in a single batch. This morning, you’ve just brewed enough coffee to last you from Monday until Friday. Using a 2-quart jar, simply double the amounts shown above by two. The following amounts of coffee and water can be used in an extra-large French press, such as mine: 5 ounces of coffee (about 1 1/4 cups whole coffee beans processed into approximately 2 1/2 cups coarsely ground coffee) and 5 cups water. Upon completion, you’ll have around 4 1/4 cups concentrate, which is enough to make 8 1/2 cups of cold brew.

Recommended Steeping Time

In addition, the steeping time may be adjusted. In other places, “overnight or 12 hours” has been suggested, as has “at least 18 or up to 24 hours,” so do what works best for you and your schedule. Starbucks steeps their cold brew for a full 20 hours before serving. It’s fine if you unintentionally steep yours for a longer period of time (even 24 hours or more). It’s possible that your concentrate will taste a little bitterer than it would have otherwise, but it’s most likely alright. It may also be particularly potent, in which case you may wish to dilute it with a little more water.

How to Strain Your Cold Brew

It is necessary to filter the coffee grounds from the water once the coffee has been steeped for a period of time. A fine-mesh sieve or a French press filter will not suffice (you will end up with a murky, sludgy concentrate if you use these techniques). The majority of approaches will recommend using cheese cloth, however I despise cheese cloth! It’s tough to deal with, and it appears to be quite wasteful. As I experimented with many additional possibilities, I discovered two that are quite effective.

Choose one of the following:

  1. Use the “basket” paper filters that splay out in a circular seashell form as you see below, rather than the thicker “bag” paper filters. If you’re using a paper filter, make sure it’s composed of very thin paper rather of a heavier substance that will take an eternity to filter through. This is a list of the filters that I used
  2. A handkerchief from the past: Yes, you may use any tiny, thin, clean, lint-free cotton fabric, such as a cocktail napkin, for this project. When draped across your sieve, it should be large enough to completely cover it. In my picture props, I discovered a handkerchief that was easy to wash and reuse, and I love that it’s inexpensive (although you could wind up with a light coffee stain, so don’t use your favorite white one)

For a fine-mesh sieve, insert the coffee filter into it, or lay your towel over the sieve, to strain it out. It should be set up over a pitcher or liquid measuring cup, and the concentrate should be poured through it. That’s all there is to it! All you need is coffee and some sort of filter to get started. That’s all there is to it. If you have a regular fine-mesh kitchen strainer, you can even create cold brew with it! However, the most straightforward method of making cold brew at home – without the need of expensive cold brew devices – is to use a French press.

You will learn how to make cold brew coffee in no time at all using only a French press and your favorite coffee in this guide.

If you only have access to pre-ground coffee, there are a few tweaks you can make (we’ll go over the adjustments at the conclusion of the article).

Cold Brew Concentrate: What Are We Making?

Despite the fact that all of our best cold brew recipes are technically cold brew concentrates, this just means that the coffee produced is far stronger than your regular cup of coffee. Our favorite thing about concentrates is that they make exceptionally tasty coffee that is free of bitterness. If you want strong coffee, you can drink a concentrate straight up; however, you may dilute a concentrate with water, ice, or milk if you prefer a weaker cup of coffee. You may use this variety to your advantage when you want to share your cold brew with someone who has a different palate than you do.

When you prepare a concentrate that is intended to be consumed in a one-to-one ratio with water, you will only require half the amount of storage space.

Now that we’ve covered concentrates, let’s get to the recipe.

How to Make French Press Cold Brew:


  • Cool or room temperature (not cold) water
  • A cup of coffee (ideally ground whole bean)

1.Weighgrind your coffee.

To weigh 100 g (about 3.5 ounces) of coffee, place it on your scale. Prepare the coffee by grinding it extremely coarsely, considerably rougher than you would for a typical French press.

2.Add coffee and cold water to your French press.

Pour 100 g (about 3.5 ounces) of coffee into your scale and weigh it out on paper. Using a coarse grinder, grind the coffee even more coarsely than you would for a typical French press of coffee.

3.Stir and let the coffee steep.

Continue to stir until all of the grounds are moist.

Allow for at least 16 hours of room temperature storage on your counter top.

4.Press the plunger and pour the coffee into another container.

Using the plunger of the French press, press down on the grounds at the bottom until you encounter resistance. Don’t cram the earth into the bottom of the container. Then pour the coffee into a big container that will be used for both serving and storing.

Temperature and steeping time

This recipe differs from most others in that we allow the coffee to sit at room temperature rather than in the refrigerator for the first step. Perhaps “not hot brew coffee” would be a more appropriate moniker for cold brew coffee. When you prepare coffee with near-boiling water, the taste of the beans is released from the beans in a matter of minutes rather than hours. Coffee that is harsh and bitter is produced when the coffee is allowed to sit in the water for a period of 10 minutes. When this occurs, we refer to the coffee as having been over-extracted.

If you don’t want your coffee to taste weak and flavorless, you must allow the coffee to rest in the water and steep for at least 16 hours.

It might be interesting to experiment with different steeping times to watch how the tastes vary as the coffee extract is steeped for a longer period of time.

Adding a paper filter

The first thing you’ll notice about this recipe is that we let the coffee rest at room temperature rather than in the refrigerator for many hours. The term “not hot brew coffee” could serve as a more accurate description of cold brew. Once the taste of the beans has been removed from the beans when they are brewed with near-boiling water, the process is complete. If you let the coffee steep in the water for 10 minutes, the result will be coffee that is harsh and bitter. A condition known as over-extraction is present when this occurs.

If you don’t want your coffee to taste weak and flavorless, you must let the coffee to rest in the water and steep for at least that long.

To notice how the tastes vary when the coffee extract is steeped for a longer period of time, it might be entertaining to experiment with different steeping times.

What coffee should I use?

Almost any type of coffee will yield satisfactory results, but dark roast cold brew is our personal favorite. The temperature at which the tea is brewed has an impact on the flavors that are extracted throughout the brewing process. Generally speaking, the lower temperatures used in cold brew processes extract mostly sweet, chocolaty, and earthy flavors from the beans themselves. In cold brew, we like to use dark roast coffee beans (such as Lifeboost’s outstanding low-acid dark beans) since they are typically packed with these characteristics, which we find helps to really bring out and highlight the sweetness.

When brewing at a lower temperature, it is possible to achieve a balance between a light roast’s acidity and the naturally low acidity that results from doing so.

What if I don’t have a grinder?

It was previously indicated that a very coarse grind size is required for manufacturing French press cold brew, which we reiterated in the introduction. When working without a grinder, you’ll need to make certain changes in order to avoid over-extraction of the juices. Use of pre-ground coffee made for automated drip machines will result in a muddy, bitter mess if you follow the recipe exactly as written. If you use whole beans, you will end up with a bitter mess. You can still produce a great cold brew, though, if you make a few little adjustments.

1.Weigh the pre-ground coffee and add it to your French press.

To weigh 100 g of coffee, place it on your scale. After that, pour it into your French press.

2.Weigh the water and pour it in.

1,000 g of water should be weighed. Pour the water into the coffee in the French press and stir well.

3.Stir and let steep.

Continue to stir until all of the grounds are moist. Leave it on your counter for at least 12 hours, but no longer than 16 hours, at room temperature before serving.

4.Plunge and decant.

Using the plunger of the French press, press down on the grounds at the bottom until you encounter resistance. Don’t cram the earth into the bottom of the container. Pour the contents into a big container. This recipe reduces the strength and extraction level of the coffee by using more water and less steeping time than the original recipe. It isn’t ideal, and coarse ground coffee is recommended, but if you can’t avoid buying pre-ground coffee, this procedure will yield a better batch of cold brew than you would otherwise get.
